ABSTRACT

In countries with low and middle income, self-poisoning with pesticides is a major public health problem. Exposure to pesticide can lead to other adverse health effects, such as diabetes and cardiovascular toxicity related health problems. Pesticide retail shops are predominantly located in urban areas and they cater to the demand of urban population for household products used in lawns and gardens. The reports dealing with the health concerns of pesticide exposure are confined to either incidental/accidental or occupational poisoning. Individuals who work in the pesticide manufacturing industry and pesticide shops and those who use pesticides for agricultural and other public health activities are exposed to pesticides. Usually pesticide shops have a showroom and a warehouse. While in the showroom limited quantities of pesticides are displayed, in a warehouse large quantities of the same are dumped on the floor. In the showroom, plastic packets, bottles, and tin cans containing pesticides are kept in different racks.
