ABSTRACT

Since October 2011, the monthly growth of world population has been about 7.7 million, which is equivalent of adding another Chennai 12 times in a year. India is the second most populous country on earth, with 17% of the world’s population dependent on just more than 9% of the arable land. Total population is important, but a focus on the total overlooks other important trends, including internal migration from villages to cities. Clearly, the world’s current growth in population is unsustainable. Countrywide, there are still population control programmes. India adopted the National Population Policy in 1976, which included overall well-being. Population controversies can be best known by reading Reverend Thomas Malthus, an English clergyman and influential thinker about population. Even with a stable population, as more people demand more energy and can afford vehicles, emissions will rise, carbon dioxide included. When the population increases, the effects also increase.
