ABSTRACT

The need for development to address social issues is unquestionable. This chapter discusses difficulty of building consensus and balancing the needs of people, profit, and the environment in the modern world with examples. Despite India’s rich history of environmentally sustainable practices and habits, environmentalists have to find solutions to the environmental and social problems and promote sustainability within the new phase of economic development. In 1997, the Clean Technology Initiative was started as a joint effort of the United States Agency for International Development and the Industrial Credit and Investment Corporation of India Bank, to promote climate friendly technologies and certifiable environmental management systems. Energy-saving technologies are being promoted and developed for industry. Public participation is very important in promoting environmental sustainability in the face of economic development. The Centre for Science and Environment is one of the most well-known environmental advocacy groups in India. The Confederation of Indian Industries is India’s oldest business organization.
