ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the sustainability challenges faced by Indian businesses and explores the meaning of sustainable development and its implications for India’s corporate sector. It describes how studies on sustainable development can help realize and deepen the emerging understanding of sustainable business. The chapter examines a link between social movement and business. Corporate social responsibility covers a wide range of issues relating to business conduct, ethics, corporate governance, and environmental protection in view of sustained economic growth. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) aims at business practices that would enhance human, social, intellectual, reputational, and environmental capital in business to give it a competitive advantage. In India, CSR has typically been associated with philanthropic activities. Mandatory provisions of CSR expenditure will increase availability of funds for societal development activities and may lead to delivery of goods and services to the people in a cost-effective manner.
