ABSTRACT

Cognitive neuroscientists have devised a variety of methods for assaying the bodily and neural correlates of mental activity. As technological and theoretical advances have allowed cognitive neuro-science to elucidate the relationship between mental and neural processes in ever more detail, engineering psychology has gained further insights into real-world human performance. In sensory regions of the visual cortex, limits on the number of available neurons constrain the quality of perceptual processing. In applied attention research; the most common use of neurocognitive measures has been for the study of mental resources and workload. Using event-related potential, attentional effects are studied by examining changes in the pattern of electrical activity that occurs in the brain following a stimulus event. The influence of attention is often seen through changes in the latency or amplitude with which particular components occur.
