ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies all of the powers and procedures for the notification and control of communicative diseases that are enforced by the local authority. Local authorities are advised that the majority of such powers should be delegated to the Consultant in Communicative Disease Control appointed by each Health Protection Agency. This will require a formal resolution of the local authority detailing each of the powers being delegated and is to be done in the context of a local communicable disease plan which identifies the role and responsibilities of the various agencies and individuals. Local authorities need to provide appropriate professional and other staff support to the Consultant in Communicative Disease Control and ensure that proper arrangements have been made for the receipt of notifications. If Public Health England considers the case to be urgent, the information must be provided orally as soon as reasonably practicable.
