ABSTRACT

A local authority may by notice require any person to provide such information as it may reasonably require to fulfil its powers and duties with respect to both public and private water supplies. Water is to be judged as being wholesome if it satisfies the requirements of regulation 4 of the water supply regulations 2018 or regulation 4 of the private water supplies regulations 2016 as appropriate. Local authorities are placed under a statutory duty to take all such steps as they consider appropriate for keeping themselves informed about the wholesomeness and sufficiency of all public water supplies. The Secretary of State deals with authorisation of the temporary supply of public water that is not wholesome. A private water supply is a supply of water provided otherwise than by a water undertaker or water supply licensee and includes a supply provided for the purposes of the bottling of water.
