ABSTRACT

The physical control of grit and dust from furnaces is part of the legislation and policy to protect and improve air quality and protect health of the local population. Arrestors are the current method of arresting dust and grit from various furnaces. In situations where arrestment plant is required for either domestic or non-domestic furnaces, the plant must be approved by the local authority or installed in accordance with plans and specifications submitted to and approved by the local authority. The Clean Air Regulations 1971 lay down the detailed requirements. Although power is given to the Secretary of State in the Act to include the measurement of fumes, the regulations apply only to grit and dust. The Secretary of State is required to prepare and publish a strategy containing policies with respect to the assessment and management of the quality of air.
