ABSTRACT

Intelligent use of information systems helps companies make better decisions. When a decision has structure, an information system can use that structure to predict the outcome of various choices. Dashboards, by presenting the same information to everyone, can align an organization around metrics that it most needs to track. The success of any business depends on decisions that its managers make. Decisions can also be categorized by their scope: how much of an organization they affect, for how long they affect it, and how much they constrain other decisions. An organization’s strategy is its overall approach to its business. Choosing and implementing a strategy require decisions. Once an organization’s top management chooses a strategy, others make decisions that move the strategy forward within their areas of responsibility. Operational decisions are made on a regular basis during normal operations.
