ABSTRACT

The previous few chapters have established the significant role of endophytes from the tropics. Most of the tropical endophytes are valuable biosources of important compounds with multiple applications. In this chapter, key endophyte genera that predominate endophytic research in the tropics are presented. This includes the actinobacterial endophytes, as well as prominent species of fungal endophytes (i.e., Diaporthe, Phomopsis, Trichoderma, Xylaria, Muscodor, Lasiodiplodia) (Frisvad et al., 2008). These isolates have been extensively discovered as efficient producers of many secondary metabolites (Whalley and Edwards, 1995). The following sections will present groups of specific fungal endophytes with established bioactivities.
