ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at all that work brings us in addition to money. A 'slave' is defined in the Oxford Dictionary as 'a person who is the legal property of another, servant completely divested of freedom and personal rights', while the word 'free' is defined as: 'Not in bondage to another; without ties, obligations, or constraints upon one's action'. For people who are in jobs they hate, who work for no more reason than having to earn, trying to think about what is good about work can be something of a trial. Work of some kind is essential for our self-esteem and sense of contribution. The balance between enjoying work and wishing to be free of it depends not just on the nature of the job, but also on the other priorities in healthcare professional’s life.
