ABSTRACT

This chapter provides practical advice about how to set up a business, including real-life case studies of doctors who have become entrepreneurs: what people term, doctorpreneurs. Clinicians’ proximity to patients and knowledge of disease makes them ideally placed to be innovators of healthcare services. The incentive to act in an entrepreneurial fashion goes beyond financial gain. The critical benefit of creating a culture in healthcare where entrepreneurship is encouraged is direct and indirect improvement of patient care. The trend for medical tourism is a rapidly innovating and growing field. Medics often have, for one reason or another, a fantastic knack of seeing opportunities, but a paralleled inability to capitalise. Process innovation in healthcare is required to identify new solutions for managing long-term conditions. Radical innovation is a concept that fundamentally changes the way things are done and frequently leads to a new industry.
