ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at how Masters in Business Administration (MBAs) may benefit the National Health Service (NHS). The implication should not be taken that these roles require degrees in management. Public health physicians act locally and nationally to help define laws, regulations and policies that determine how healthcare is delivered. Public health doctors can be found in a diverse variety of settings, including Primary Care Trusts (PCTs), Strategic Health Authorities (SHAs), Arms Length Bodies such as the Health Protection Agency (HPA), charities, and local and national government. The newly created post of Director of Medical Education is presently occupied by Patricia Hamilton. Medicine is perhaps the best example of how much can be learnt in classes and from books and yet how much more important understanding and wisdom comes from experience. Management study after management study shows that experience is superior training to course-based learning.
