ABSTRACT

Ensure that the people are familiar with the vascular anatomy of the lower limbs. Gain verbal consent to perform the examination, by explaining what it will involve. Both the cough and tap tests for varicose veins are outdated and will tell the people very little. However, it is worth knowing about it for the people examination. The general inspection and palpation will cover the majority of the initial part of the examination. Buerger's test is positive if the patient's legs turn a waxy, cadaveric white colour on elevation with emptying, or 'guttering' of the superficial veins, followed by a reactive hyperaemia on dependency. Buerger’s test was positive on the left and negative on the right. In conclusion, this Buerger has a critically ischaemic left leg with non-viable tissue over the left heel.
