ABSTRACT

Orthopaedic examinations are common in the final OSCE, because the patients are relatively well and examining them is simple. The GALS examination is covered elsewhere in the book, so the chapter focuses mainly on the shoulder and, to a lesser extent, the elbow. Pay attention separately to the glenohumeral joint and the scapulo–thoracic interface. Palpate the humeral shaft and head by pushing their fingers into the axilla. The elbow, like the shoulder, has a number of articulations. However, there is probably not enough to examine at the elbow to justify a full OSCE station. Orthopaedic examinations in which abnormalities are elicited should often be completed by performing a simple and relevant neurological and vascular examination. Finally, cover the patient appropriately and ensure that they are comfortable.
