ABSTRACT

Traditionally, the digital rectal examination (DRE) is performed as part of the abdominal examination. Reluctance on both the doctor’s and the patient’s part should not limit its clinical application and its importance should not be underestimated. It answers a great many questions, since many medical conditions manifest themselves at the anus/rectum. It is very unlikely that the people will have to perform the DRE on a real person in the OSCE, and mannequins are often employed. The patient needs to be in the left lateral position, with their knees drawn up to their chest. Cover the patient and dispose of gauze and gloves in the bin. There is no evidence of rectal bleeding or melaena.
