ABSTRACT

Nasogastric tube insertion is an important skill to possess, although in practice it is often performed by nursing staff. Having read the instructions, enter the station and introduce the people self to the patient and examiner. It may be employed for persistent vomiting and bowel obstruction, in which case gastric decompression will provide symptomatic relief. There are some important contraindications to NGT insertion that the people must be aware of: individuals who have suffered head trauma, maxillofacial injury or anterior fossa injury warrant extreme caution — blind insertion of an NGT may result in passage though the cribiform plate, penetrating the brain. Flush the NGT with sterile water, and clamp or connect the NGT as appropriate. Document the NGT insertion in the patient’s medical record. .
