ABSTRACT

Site investigations or subsurface explorations are done for obtaining the information about subsurface conditions at the site of proposed constructions. Site investigations in one form or the other is generally required for every big engineering project. Information about the surface and subsurface features is essential for the design of structures and for planning construction techniques. A subsoil investigation report should contain the data obtained from bore holes, the site observations, and laboratory results. It should also give the recommendations about the suitable type of foundations, allowable soil pressure, and expected settlements. A foundation is that part of a structure which transmits the weight of the structure to the ground. All structures constructed on land are supported on foundations. A foundation is, therefore, a connecting link between the structure proper and the ground which supports it.
