ABSTRACT

Building materials have an important role to play in this modern age of technology. The rapid advancement of constructional methods and changes in the organization of the building industry may influence the choice of materials. Stones used for civil engineering works can be classified geologically, physically, and chemically. The common tests conducted on stones are crushing strength test, water absorption test, abrasion test, impact test, and acid test. Concrete is a composite material composed of coarse aggregate bonded together with fluid cement which hardens over time. Mortar is a workable paste used to bind building blocks such as stones, bricks, and concrete masonry units together, fill and seal the irregular gaps between them, and sometimes add decorative colors or patterns in masonry walls. The paints are coatings of fluid materials, and they are applied over the surfaces of timber and metals.
