ABSTRACT
In many other countries there is no specific infanticide legislation – even Scotland did not adopt the English statute, having a separate crime of ‘child murder’, but long before 1922 that country had held a more enlightened attitude towards the mentally stressed mother. In Japan, Funayama et al. (1994) have described cases of multiple, repeated infanticides by five mothers.
