ABSTRACT

I n t ro d u c t i o n Obesity is a growing problem worldwide (1,2). In the United States, 65% of adults are overweight or obese, defined as an excess of body weight compared with set standards (body mass index [BMI] ≥ 25 kg/m2), and 31% are obese (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2) (1). Overweight and obesity, particularly abdominal or visceral obesity, are known risk factors for a variety of diseases including diabetes, heart disease, stroke, hypertension, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea, and some forms of cancer (3).
