ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses: how a Model F -test or equivalent t-test can shed light on the basic question “Is the X variable of any use in explaining the Y variable in a simple linear regression model for your sampled population?”; methods that can enable you to evaluate the extent that the X variable is useful in explaining Y in simple linear regression; the perils of making predictions and drawing conclusions in simple linear regression beyond the range of X values observed in the sample; how the power of a hypothesis test can be increased and the width of a confidence and a prediction interval can be decreased in simple linear regression; and SAS programs illustrating the methods featured in this chapter.
