ABSTRACT

This chapter lists media-specific regulations for various countries and the European Union (EU), reviews some of the media-specific international agreements, and lists media-specific standards from organizations. To address this problem, the 1979 Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution was signed following negotiations convened by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. Early agreements were designed to protect economic interests of navigation, fishing, agriculture, and industry. Principles of ecology and proper management and protection from pollution were considered in later agreements and legislation. The London Convention prohibits the incineration of waste at sea to prevent ash being deposited into the ocean and impacting marine life. Parties to the 1996 Protocol to the Convention on the Prevention of Marine Pollution by Dumping of Wastes and Other Matter (The London Convention) must establish an authority to issue permits for dumping at sea. Water resources have been a subject of EU programs and directives since the early 1970s.
