ABSTRACT

The procedure described in this chapter deals with the collection of blood in different vertebrate species. Depending on the amount of blood needed and the type of study done, the animal may be exsanguinated or a small sample may be taken at different time intervals, leaving the animal alive for the duration of the study. The use of heparin or other anticoagulant is required to obtain plasma, while for serum collection no anticoagulant is needed.
