ABSTRACT

The preparation of a cell suspension whether from blood, body fluids, or organs is stressful for the cells. Consequently, some of the cells may die. Furthermore, when working directly from a cell culture, it is important to know the state of health of the cells prior to use. Two dyes are commonly used to evaluate cell viability: trypan blue dye and ethidium bromide with acridine orange. Viability can also be assessed by flow cytometry with propidium iodide (PI).
