ABSTRACT

The killing of one cell type by another through direct contact constitutes a major protective mechanism against viral, certain bacterial, and perhaps cancerous cells. In this chapter, we will describe three types of target cell killing that are not major histocompatibility complex (MHC) restricted and that do not display memory or specificity:

Natural killer (NK) cell activity

Antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC)

Lymphokine-activated cytotoxicity (LAK)
