ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with all aspects of the shotcrete construction process and should be particularly useful to shotcrete contractors, and shotcrete engineers and inspectors monitoring and signing off on the completed works. Topics dealt with include: a review of the members and responsibilities of the shotcrete crew; preparation of substrate surfaces for shotcreting; formwork and scaffolding, including important safety considerations; fixing and tying reinforcement and embedments to make them suitable for encapsulation with shotcrete; devices to control thickness, line and grade and tolerance; construction of various types of joints in the shotcrete; protection of adjacent surfaces from contamination from rebound and overspray; prequalification of the shotcrete nozzlemen and crew proposed for the project; proper procedures for shotcrete construction using the bench-shooting, or layer-shooting methods; use of the hybrid (shoot and vibrate) construction method, where appropriate; quality of encasement of reinforcing steel and embedments; finishing, protection and curing.
