ABSTRACT

Emissions from an individual automobile are low, relative to a smoke stack. However, emissions from numerous automobiles across the country, especially in urban areas, become a big polluter as a whole. This chapter deals with an overview of mobile pollution which presents categories of mobile sources, types, amounts, and annual trends of emissions. It describes emissions from engines and factors affecting their emissions. The chapter discusses the alternatives for control of mobile source emissions. Most of the reduction in transportation can be attributed the use of effective technology in areas such as engine control, use of catalysts for reduce emissions from tail pipes, use of improved or alternative fuels, and changes in patterns of communication. The most significant emission from an automobile is resulted from the fuel combustion in its engine that is vented through the exhaust pipe. This exhaust accounts for approximately 90% of the total emissions by an automobile.
