ABSTRACT

Many air pollutants can cause regional problems, go across a national border, and even become global issues. Acid rain problems, ozone depletion in the stratosphere, and climate change due to greenhouse gas emissions are good examples. This chapter deals with a discussion on basic photochemical cycle and role of volatile organic compounds in the cycle. It discusses the bad ozone in the troposphere, which is the main component of photochemical smog, as well as the good ozone that is being depleted in the stratosphere. Acid rain is a regional issue because its acidic components can come from air pollutants emitted far away. The chapter explains the basics and effects of acid rain as well as measures to control it. We are also facing a big challenge globally on climate change which greenhouse gases (GHGs) are the main contributors. The chapter aanlyses basics, emission sources, and control measures of GHGs.
