ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on splines, curves, and other modeling techniques. Splines are great tools that help in design and optimization, and are used in many disciplines besides graphics designs such as aircraft design, shipbuilding, and automobile design. There are numerous three-dimensional modeling software packages that are available in the market, some of which have been extremely successful and are used heavily in the game and movie industries. Different methods are available to perform subdivision modeling of surfaces to add detail to the modeled object such as approximation, corner cutting, averaging, and splitting. A curve that points towards the upward direction is called an upward curve. Depending on the type of model being created, spline modeling offers an alternative to polygon modelling. Nonuniform Rational B-Splines are a popular modeling tool as they facilitate good user interaction and can also be managed by computer graphics modeling languages and software to create complex curves and surfaces.
