ABSTRACT

Computed tomography (CT) is introduced in this chapter. The history of CT and its higher-resolution forms, microCT and nanoCT, is traced from the discovery of x-radiation and the first use of x-ray imaging to the development of the mathematics behind reconstruction from projections through the introduction of clinical CT scanners to the present-day microCT and nanoCT systems. An important part of the chapter is examination of the microCT literature and trends in imaging with this modality, trends that span the full range of scientific and engineering disciplines.
