ABSTRACT

This chapter covers mechanically induced deformation and damage (pore formation, cracking) as well as quantification of crack characteristics. Deformation of monolithic and composite materials (including cortical bone and tooth) is covered, but not cellular materials (metal and ceramic foams, trabecular bone, etc.), environmentally-assisted cracking, or deformation-based processing, as these were covered in earlier chapters. Crack characterization is another important topic in this chapter.
