ABSTRACT
This chapter covers the background on x-radiation that is required before one can appreciate the constraints on microCT performance, specifically what limits data collection rates, spatial resolution, and contrast sensitivity. The topics include x-ray generation and x-ray interaction with matter, imaging and x-ray contrast, and imaging that can be obtained for a given specimen. Understanding the fundamentals underlying experimental trade-offs is essential to using microCT effectively and efficiently.
