ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the application of the SIMPLE methods for the simulation of mould filling. The SIMPLE methods based on the two coordinate systems, that is, the Cartesian and body-fitted coordinates, examined for mould filling simulation in various types of mould cavities using orthogonal and non-orthogonal grid systems. The discretized equations combined with the marker and cell method or the volume of fluid method is solved to analyze physical phenomena including free surface tracking in mould filling. The boundary conditions used for the numerical analysis of mould filling are the normal and tangential stress conditions on the free surface, no-slip condition on the wall, and the mass source from the inlet. Different from the free surface motion of the fixed amount of volume of fluid, the free surface motion of mould filling should include mass source in the computational domain matching the following relation.
