ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the similarities among the three types of transport phenomena with regards to flux laws, convective transfer, and governing equations, which are important in modelling transport phenomena. Fundamental aspects on heat, mass and momentum transport have been studied to understand how these transport phenomena be related in materials engineering problems, and be treated in numerical simulation. There is an analogy among heat, mass and momentum transport phenomena in many engineering problems. By interchanging analogous transport properties and potentials, a known solution in heat transport problems can be used to obtain the solution in mass or momentum transport problems or vice versa. It is convenient to apply the similarity among these transport phenomena in computer modelling of materials processing. In heat, mass and momentum transport of materials processing, convective transfer caused by bulk fluid motion is concomitant with diffusive transfer governed by the basic flux law.
