ABSTRACT

There are various systems, procedures and methods to run an artificial insemination service. This chapter discusses a system as practised in India from the description of an artificial insemination unit to the qualification of the artificial insemination technician. The artificial insemination service can be stationary or mobile. The artificial insemination technician is either a paid employee of the organisation or a self-employed person. The experience in India revealed that artificial insemination service rendered by paid employees is less efficient than that provided by the self-employed person with regard to quality as well as cost recovery. The regional semen supply station carries out the regular supply of frozen semen and liquid nitrogen to all the artificial insemination units under its jurisdiction. Around 300 to 400 artificial insemination units can be controlled by one regional semen supply station. Frozen semen is either purchased from outside sources or produced within the artificial insemination organisation.
