ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the reader will learn what is needed to complete the great grind of creating the game on the way to the bug-fixing period of alpha. This chapter covers maintaining a good work/life balance, how time is always an important consideration, how testing your work is paramount, and how anyone can be a visual storyteller. Other topics include allowing people to make mistakes, how to tune the game's difficulty, level design 101, goal setting to keep everything on track, risk versus reward for the player, how artificial intelligence can benefit every game, and how being present to tune the game at every waking minute is a valuable trait. By the conclusion of the chapter, the reader will see the massive amount of work it will take to get the game built, along with accepting that chaos in the project is an expected result no matter how much everyone plans for it.
