ABSTRACT

Augmented intelligence overcomes the limitations of isolating human understanding from the massive amounts of both structured and unstructured data available to analyze complexity in record time. There are two techniques for applying augmented intelligence to improve an end-to-end business process: weak augmentation or strong augmentation. The automation of the form-filling task by an application of augmented intelligence results in increased productivity and efficiency through a process executed by a mix of human and machine labor. Applying natural language processing and machine learning on top of robotic process automation is a bridge to the enhanced form of augmented intelligence—strong augmentation. The chapter considers two examples of augmented intelligence in a business process—predictive maintenance and predictive sourcing. It shows how augmented intelligence can improve the efficiency of business processes. Applying weak augmentation, routine tasks within a process can be automated via robotic process automation.
