ABSTRACT
As already outlined in Chapter 1, there has always been a focused interest in the potential seismic vulnerability of historic towers. In the case of Ghirlandina Tower, this interest was further increased by the recent earthquake events in the Emilia Romagna region in May 2012 because many historical masonry campaniles (bell towers) collapsed despite the moderate magnitude (M = 5.9) of these events.
