ABSTRACT

The development of the Debye–Huckel Law is one of the most important 20th-century accomplishments in the field of the physical chemistry of electrolyte solutions. Given its importance and widespread use, this chapter provides the detailed derivation and describe how the Extended Debye–Huckel Equation and the Davies Equation are developed from it. P. Debye and H. Huckel realized that if one could understand how the effects of coulombic interactions depend on the nature and concentrations of the dissolved ions in solution, then it would be possible to predict γ values for ions as a function of the ionic composition of a solution. The charge present in the cloud around a given core ion is made up of portions of charge from many different, surrounding neighboring ions. Continual Brownian motion makes those ions flit in and out of the cloud.
