When parties can perceive and understand conflict as a learning partnership, it is much easier for them to ask their perceived adversary, “Will you please help me to sort out this problem?” And, when they get the answer, it is rarely threatening. Through asking for help, they often find some terrified, repressed part of themselves looking back at them through their “adversary's” eyes. Understanding this as mediators, it is our responsibility to help opposing parties come to see that their conflict is also a portal to a higher level of consciousness and therefore cooperation, which is the subject of Chapter 8.
