ABSTRACT

A single table is reminiscent of a single well-organized spreadsheet. But in the same way that a workbook can contain multiple spreadsheets, we will often work with multiple tables. It is more efficient for the computer to store and search tables in which “like is stored with like.” Thus, a database maintained by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics on the arrival times of US commercial flights will consist of multiple tables, each of which contains data about different things. There are other related kinds of information that we will want to know about these flights. We would certainly be interested in the particular airline to which each flight belonged.
