ABSTRACT

The nutritional guidelines for Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) have been replaced by Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs), which are currently followed by the USA and Canada. The DRI values of nutrients are sufficient for the growth and development of the 97%–98% of the healthy individuals. However, they may not be adequate for the prevention of age-related chronic diseases. The DRI values for carotenoids, alpha-lipoic acid, N-acetylcysteine, coenzyme Q10, and L-carnitine have not been determined. The optimal values of nutrients needed for the prevention or improved management of human diseases are not known.
