Akee: This tropical fruit was thought to have originated in Guinea, West Africa, and brought to the New World by the slaves that were settled in the Caribbean. Another belief is that Captain Bligh (of Mutiny on the Bounty fame) introduced akee to the West Indies along with breadfruit from Tahiti, since its botanical title Blighia sapida is named for him. It is now widely cultivated in tropical America and sold in North America where the population includes many people of Caribbean origin.
