ABSTRACT
The primary purpose of an irrigation system is to effec-
tively and efficiently: 1) divert and deliver water from a
source; 2) convey and deliver water to the cropped areas;
and 3) uniformly and adequately distribute the water over
the land being irrigated. It is essential that each subsystem
contain elements capable of measuring and controlling
flows for efficient management. Provisions to remove
excess water in the delivery channels and fields, referred
to as the drainage system, are equally important to the
sustainable operation of any irrigation system, and there-
fore must also be considered a fundamental functional
component.
