ABSTRACT

Biodiesel is regarded as the most viable renewable fuel to

supplement petroleum-based diesel at least in the short to

medium term. As it can be produced from virtually any

vegetable oils or animal fats including waste greases, bio-

diesel is of particular interest to the agricultural sector,

where diesel fuel is a primary power source for machinery

such as tractors and combines. In addition, earth moving

and construction equipment are typically powered by die-

sel engines often in remote locations. Local production of

biodiesel is an attractive proposition for such vehicles

when diesel supplies are not easily accessible. This entry

focuses on the production of biodiesel from a broad range

of source materials, the importance of quality standards,

and the utilization of biodiesel for off-road vehicles.
