ABSTRACT

In order to understand the fundamental characteristics of compressible airflow, which suits the purpose of air transport application, this chapter considers one-dimensional airflow following its streamlines. To analyze the relationship between the speed of airflow and the properties of air, we use a set of mathematical equations to describe the state of the air and the motion, and energy change of the airflow. The equations used to analyze the airflow are called a set of control equations, which describe the nature and characteristics of the air and air movement. The chapter considers the airflow within its flow path s with air property, p, ρ, and T, at speed v. In this chapter the set of control equations are: the continuity equation, momentum (Euler) equation, and the energy equation. The speed of sound changes with the airspeed if there is no heat exchange to the airflow and the airflow satisfies the energy equation.
