ABSTRACT

Fermentation technology, both fundamental and applied, was transferred to Japan especially in areas of antibiotic biosynthesis. Developments in molecular biology, especially in academic institutions along both coasts of the US, are well known. However, analytical and small-scale separation equipment has been common for many years in the “biotechnology-developed” countries. The absence of one of the many key “environmental” conditions needed for success in biotechnology may act as an impossible barrier to any future growth in areas lacking associated support structures. Conventional wisdom is that the host of biotechnology-based firms will undergo some major transformations. The developments in biotechnology were revolutionary. A partial listing of opportunities and commercial ventures in biotechnology. There are many commercial opportunities in biotechnology, aside from human therapeutics. The corporate situation in biotechnology continues to change rapidly. Nature of the science, the technology, and the business are responsible for rapid shifts in strategy.
