ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a conceptual focus on the operational role of a project as specified by the Project Management Institute’s model entitled the Project Management Body of Knowledge Guide. It describes the process of translating the original project deliverable goal into a technical work unit-oriented structure with time and cost estimates. The chapter focuses on the tools and techniques discussed to better equip a project managers to manage various aspects of project performance, including cost, schedule, scope, and resources. It is scope control that covers a range of topics from the role of project change boards to configuration management. The chapter explores a method to pursue project environmental analysis using industry standard guidelines, such as ANSI EIA-748 and a mechanical auditing technique to analyze the project plan from a structural point of view. In each case, the method described in these chapters focuses on a different aspect of the project management process.
