ABSTRACT

The development of a new type of lawn format is likely to have consequences and probably some unexpected outcomes too. It seems plausible that these will stem from two fundamental aspects of Tapestry Lawns (T-lawns): the ideological revision of what a lawn can be and an affiliated botanical outcome. Each lawn will develop and self-organise in a unique fashion based primarily on the local conditions and the plant choices made at inception. It is therefore difficult to foresee what any one lawn will look like as it develops over time. Observation indicates how young children with few preconceived ideas on how lawns should be used can initially become completely absorbed in investigating and using T-lawns in ways quite unlike how they treat other garden features, such and flower beds and borders. The plants and cultivars used in T-lawns may simply not stay contained within them. Just as plants can move into a T-lawn, they can also move out.
